Why Choose Lipascor?

Lipascor® capsule is an all natural product derived from the well-documented traditional red yeast rice (known as “Hong Qu” in Chinese). It has been used for more than 1000 years as a food supplement for healthy blood circulation. Lipascor® capsule contains Xuezhikang®, the proprietary ingredient which is scientifically derived from fermentation of red yeast (Monascus purpreus Went species) on premium rice. Lipascor® capsule contains naturally-occurring HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors and unsaturated fatty acids.

The naturally-occurring HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors in Lipascor® capsule work by lowering the liver’s production of cholesterol. In response to the drop in cholesterol levels within the liver, the liver cells will produce more receptors to absorb LDL from the blood, causing the circulating levels of cholesterol to decline. In addition, Lipascor® capsule helps in the lowering of harmful triglycerides and increasing the levels of HDL, the “Good Cholesterol”.

Difference between the HypoCol® and Lipascor®?
The concentration of natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (monacolins) in Lipascor® is higher than that in HypoCol® even though both are classified as Chinese Proprietary Medicine and contain the proprietary Red Yeast Rice from WPU (WBL-Peking University Biotech). HypoCol® is an OTC preparation used for mild to moderate hyperlipidemia. Lipascor® on the other hand contains xuezhikang® which is specially formulated for the treatment of dyslipidaemia in a clinical setting. Its safety and efficacy has been extensively investigated in clinical studies.

What is the difference between Lipascor® and other statin drugs?
Lipascor® is a natural product of fermentation of red yeast (Monascus purpureus Went specie) on rice. It contains a mixture of natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (monacolins); substantial amounts of mono, di and polyunsaturated fatty acids; and other constituents such as proteins, amino acids, isoflavones and trace elements whereas the other statin drugs are single chemical entities derived from synthetic or hemi-synthetic processes.

Will Lipascor® raise liver enzymes (serum transaminases)?
Of the numerous published clinical studies, only very few cases of moderately raised serum transaminases (less than 2 times the normal) were reported. The changes were transient and were not accompanied by any clinical symptoms. There was no report of marked increase of serum transaminases (more than 3 times) during therapy with Lipascor® (xuezhikang®) in these studies.

Will Lipascor® cause muscle degeneration (myopathy)?
No muscle degeneration was reported in all the clinical studies. Since 1995, more than one million Chinese patients have been treated with the Lipascor® (xuezhikang®) and there was not a single report of myopathy.

How safe is Lipascor®?
Many efficacy and safety studies have been done in China on Lipascor® (xuezhikang®). All the studies have clearly shown that Lipascor® (xuezhikang®) is safe and effective for treatment of hyperlipidemia. In addition, no toxic effect was observed in animal toxicity studies when 533 times the normal human dose of xuezhikang® was fed to study animals. The LD50 dose could not be determined in these studies.

A 5-year Chinese Coronary Secondary Prevention Study involving 5000 patients is currently being conducted in China (since 1998). This study will look at the long term efficacy and safety of Lipascor® (xuezhikang®) in the secondary prevention of coronary heart diseases. According to interim report, very low incidence of side effects was reported in this double blind randomised placebo controlled trial.

Do TCM products like Lipascor® have risks of mercury and arsenic poisoning?
There is no risk of heavy metals (mercury, arsenic, lead and copper) poisoning associated with Lipascor®. In compliance with the requirements by the Ministry of Health in Singapore, every batch of Lipascor® is tested for the presence of mercury, arsenic, lead and copper.

Is this the same red yeast rice from medical hall or supermarket?
Absolute no. Lipascor® is a patented substance derived from fermentation of a specific red yeast strain, Monascus purpureus Went strain which produces a naturally balanced mixture of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (monacolins) clinically proven to be safe and effective in the treatment of dyslipidaemia. Whereas the red yeast rice preparations from the medical hall or supermarket are merely a blend of food grade red yeasts fermented on rice. These preparations have little or no active ingredient and none of these preparations has been clinically tested.

Is this supposed to replace dietary supplement such as garlic etc?
Unlike dietary supplements such as garlic, Lipascor® contains natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors and is indicated for the treatment of dyslipidaemia. However, unlike conventional synthetic drugs, Lipascor also contains other natural constituents such as mono, di and polyunsaturated fatty acids; proteins and amino acids; isoflavones and trace elements which are widely recognised for their beneficial effects.

Is Lipascor® suitable for diabetic and hypertensive patients?
Clinical studies done on hyperlipidemic NIDDM and hypertensive patients showed that Lipascor® (xuezhikang®) is suitable in regulating lipid levels. Furthermore in these studies, the NIDDM patients showed enhanced blood glucose control with the addition of Lipascor® (xuezhikang®) for treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Is Lipascor® another generic statin?
No, Lipascor® is not a generic statin. It is a preparation manufactured using a patented scientific fermentation process that utilises a specific red yeast strain. This patented process produces a consistent and standardised amount of the natural active ingredients (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) in a complex mixture of other natural constituents. The effect of Lipascor® in lipid lowering is the combined action of all the natural constituents in the preparation and not attributed to the action of a single component, Lipascor® is the first preparation of this nature. The standardisation of the natural constituents in Lipascor® ensures consistent effect in lipid lowering which is important in the treatment of dyslipidaemia.

Since Lipascor® contains statins, why isn’t it a prescription item?
In Singapore, natural occurring substance containing less than 1% of lovastatin is not classified as a poison and definitely not a prescription item. Lipascor is classified as a Chinese Proprietary Medicine in Singapore which is in-line with its status in the country of origin ,China , Taiwan, Hong Kong., Korea etc.

Is there any potential drug interaction when taking lipascor?
Lipascor® contains natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, hence precautionary measures associated with the use of the class of substance is applicable. Concomitant administration of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors with azole antifungal agents and with immunosuppressants including cyclosporins as well as combination therapy with fibric acid derivatives, niacin (nicotinic acid) is known to increase the risk of myopathy. Therefore co-administration of Lipascor® with these drugs should be avoided. Modest potentiation of the effect of coumarin anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin) has been reported with statins. In patients taking coumarin anticoagulants, prothrombin time should be determined before starting Lipascor® and frequently enough during early therapy to ensure that no significant alteration of the prothrombin time occurs.

What are the potential side effects of taking Lipascor® and how can we prevent or minimize it?
The side effects reported during clinical trials were few and mild, the most common one being gastrointestinal upsets which can be alleviated by taking Lipascor® after meals.

Why should I use Lipascor® which is a CAM/TCM?
Lipascor® is an advanced and scientifically produced natural product which has its origin from Traditional Chinese Medicine and is approved as a Chinese Proprietary Medicine in Singapore. It has been extensively researched using western scientific methodologies and therefore is highly relevant in the mainstream management of dyslipidaemia. With the trends towards using natural product preparations for prevention and treatment of modern diseases, better patient compliance can be expected with Lipascor® which is an important consideration in the long-term treatment of dyslipidaemia. Furthermore, Lipascor contains other natural constituents that could have accounted for its balanced effect on various lipid fractions.

Is a wash out period required if a patient on statins is switched over to Lipascor®?
“Wash out” is only necessary in a clinical study to ensure that any drug or its metabolite from the patient’s previous medication is completely removed from the body. Lipascor® contains a balanced mixture of natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors which works by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol. We recommend that prescribers follow their usual practice of initiating and titrating new lipid lowering medication if they decide to start their patients on Lipascor®.

Is Lipascor® an alternative medicine?
Even though Lipascor has its origin from Traditional Chinese Medicine and is approved as a Chinese Proprietary Medicine, this natural preparation has been clinically tested thoroughly using modern scientific methodologies for the treatment of dyslipidaemia according to mainstream medical practice. Hence, Lipascor® should be considered a natural alternative for the treatment of dyslipidaemia.
